You have just written a post every word of which reads like my autobiography of the past month. Except that over 12 months, I wrote 75000 words and when I read them back it was a voice that was only partly mine, and partly someone I do not know nor have ever met. And all along I knew that it wasn’t what I had hoped it would be, but with the publisher constantly sending reminders I lied to myself and pretended I was underestimating my work. Had a discerning friend read it and I’ve trashed about 50,000 words. Back to the desk now. I think the problem is when I start reading other writers in between working on my manuscript - that’s when the voice changes. So now not going to read anything.

I don't think it's other writers that are to blame for my particular disaster, it's more a case that I'd given too much weight to the dot-to-dots and too little to the tone. Good luck to you!
